| Adham Wanly, born on 25 February 1908 in Alexandria, Egypt, was a leading figure of Egyptian modern painting. Together with his elder brother, Seif Wanly, he studied in the studio of the Italian painter Ottorino Bicchi who was a follower of the Macchiaioli. The Wanly brothers established their own studio in Alexandria in 1935. During the 1950's, they traveled regularly to Europe, where they painted numerous landscapes, as well as ballet, opera and theater performances. In 1957, together with his brother Seif, Adham Wanly was appointed professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Alexandria. | Seif Wanly, born on 31 March 1906 in Alexandria, Egypt, was a prominent painter. Together with his younger brother, Adham Wanly, he was among the first Alexandrian artists to depict subjects, such as circus, ballet, opera, music concerts, theater performances and bull-fighting. The Wanly brothers started painting under the Italian painter Ottorino Bicchi in 1929 before they established their own studio in Alexandria in 1935. In 1957, they were appointed professors at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Alexandria. Seif Wanly was a prolific artist and his work was influenced by the École de Barbizon, as well as cubism and fauvism. Wanly died on 15 February 1979 in Stockholm, Sweden. Read more |
